Having a baby is a wondrous life-changing experience. And at the Decatur General Women’s Center, we want to make the memories of your baby’s arrival ones that you will treasure forever. We start by announcing your baby's welcome into the world by playing Brahm's Lullaby throughout the hospital. We can't think of a better way to celebrate a new life entering the world—and our community. It might be a little detail. But it’s just one of the many ways our Women's Center staff goes out of its way to make your stay with us is as special as it deserves to be.

Rooming-in Vs. Nursery
Should your baby room with you or stay in the nursery? Whatever you decide, both of our choices ensure that you and your baby will be surrounded in the utmost comfort and care. Our postpartum rooms are spacious and allow plenty of room for you and your family to get to know your new baby with the comfort of our supportive Nursery staff close by. Likewise, our 30-bed nursery is available should you need to rest, or if care is needed for your baby. While we hope for healthy babies in all deliveries at Decatur General, we have a high-risk nursery and experienced staff at hand. And, prior to discharge, our Nursery staff will teach and review necessary skills in caring for your baby to help you make a smooth transition from hospital to home.
Certified Lactation Consultants
Few care decisions are as natural as the choice to breastfeed your baby. But for all its rewards, breastfeeding comes with its own set of challenges. To help, the Women's Center at Decatur General offers a variety of resources, including certified lactation consultants on staff, as well as support groups and breastfeeding classes. To help prepare you for any challenges you may encounter during breastfeeding, our lactation consultants are available both before and after delivery.
The ability for an infant to hear is vital to speech and language development. Which is why all babies born at Decatur General receive a complimentary hearing test through the First Sounds Program. This program is made possible thanks to the Decatur General Foundation as a community service aimed at early detection of hearing loss in infants.
The birth of a baby is an occasion to celebrate with friends and loved ones! The First Impressions Program, offered by Decatur General Foundation, allows parents, grandparents and friends to donate $125 to the Foundation to receive a medallion including baby's name, footprint and date of birth. A copy of the medallion is permanently placed on the First Impressions Wall in the Women's Center. The First Impressions Wall is a lasting tribute to the birth of your child and one that brings many return visitors to view these personal and unique medallions.
